The lawyer working for two Belleville police officers recently charged with assault causing bodily harm by the Special Investigations Unit is pushing for a speedy conclusion to the matter.
Lawyer Leo Kinahan is representing Constable Matthew Sweet and Sergeant Kyle King and Friday, while on a conference call on a separate, but Belleville police-related matter, said he’d already set up a judicial pretrial and asked for evidence disclosure from the Crown on the SIU charges.
Kinahan said he hopes to have a trial date set for the two officers on the day of their first court appearance on March 18 or within a week of that date. Kinahan said he expected the trial, which he’d hoped would be held in September, would last for one week.
The news came as dates were set for a Police Services Act hearing into a neglect of duty charge against Belleville police Sergeant Brad Lentini. That matter is scheduled to be heard September 8 and 9 in Belleville.
