Hastings County could soon have a bylaw in place regulating exotic animals in its member municipalities.
Tuesday, county council’s Planning Committee recommended council approve an exotic animal control bylaw.
In general, the bylaw would ban exotic animals, birds, and reptiles of various kinds. There would be a “grandfather” clause that could allow owners of existing exotic creatures to keep them until they die.
Included on a long list of prohibited or dangerous creatures are wolves, lions, bears, raccoons, prairie dogs, hawks, eagles, owls, parrots, crocodiles, snapping turtles, iguanas, and pythons.
If approved Hastings County council would give its member municipalities the bylaw to make changes to satisfy their own specific needs.
