The Hastings Prince Edward District School Board will hear an update on plans for the former Quinte Secondary School building at its meeting Monday.
The plans for the building are centred around creating a french immersion school for students in kindergarten to grade eight. This would draw french immersion students away from Bayside Public School, Bayside Secondary School, Harry J. Clarke and Prince Charles Trenton. Plans also include using the remaining space in to relocate staff from the HPEDSB Board Office, Kirk Alternative Education Center, and the George Umb maintenance building.
In order to move forward with the project, a public accommodation review would need to happen. The Ministry of Education currently has a moratorium on accommodation reviews.
The plans for the school include 40 classrooms for the estimated 850 to 950 students as well as space for administration and maintenance staff. The preliminary cost estimate is approximately $20 million.
The site and building of the former Quinte Secondary School is currently being used by Quinte Health Care as a COVID-19 assessment centre and will continue to be until June.
