The Three Oaks women’s shelter is set to receive a funding boost through the Hastings County Community and Human Services committee.
Three Oaks Foundation provides shelter to women who have been forced to flee their homes due to domestic violence.
In 2014 Three Oaks opened an eight-unit Transition Home in Belleville, the only one in Hastings County.
It provides supportive housing up to 12 months.
At its recent meeting, the committee recommended that Hastings County Council approve $32,000 annually for the next two years, towards a rent-subsidy program for the home.
Belleville Councillor Bill Sandision called it a “great institution” to have in the community.
“I sometimes feel it’s one of those that sort of slips under the radar from time to time and doesn’t get the dialogue across the community about the women who find themselves in abusive relationships.”
Quinte West Councillor Karen Sharpe expressed her support for the shelter and its work for women in need of help.
“I’m so grateful as we all are for Three Oaks in providing the support to women and children in transition in emergency shelter and what they do beyond that for women and children. I’m very thankful for Three Oaks.”
Quinte West Councillor Terry Cassidy added, ” It’s much needed in the community. During the pandemic I’m sure there is a number of women who are in very difficult straits and it’s very difficult to get out because of the situation of COVID-19.”
The recommendation goes before County Council at its meeting on January 29.
