The first coach and general manager of the Belleville Bulls, Larry Mavety has passed away in Kingston.
Although born in Woodstock Mavety grew up in Belleville before playing 15 seasons of professional hockey including six in the now defunct World Hockey Association.
Mavety returned to Belleville following his retirement and assumed the dual role of coach and G. M. with the Bulls who were in their first year in the Provincial Junior “A” League. Two years later the Bulls joined the OHL with Mavety at the helm.
Mavety served a total of 14 seasons over two stints with Belleville before moving to the Kingston Frontenacs in 1997. The Bulls were owned by Dr. Bob Vaughan. Vaughan’s son Brad grew up around the team and Larry Mavety.
Longtime Frontenacs broadcaster Jim Gilchrist says Mavety’s death came as a shock.
Larry Mavety was inducted into the Belleville Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. Mavety was 78.
