There’s great news for current and future residents of Prince Edward County this morning (Friday).
Yesterday, the provincial government’s Treasury Board approved the funding necessary to build a brand new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital in Picton, a project that has been talked about for a few years.
Bay of Quinte riding MPP and cabinet minister Todd Smith told Quinte News $100 million was approved for the build.
The new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital will feature 18 care beds, with the possibility of an additional five, and have a 24/7 emergency department.
Smith says the search for qualified general contractors will begin in the spring with tenders going out in 2022. It’s hoped the hospital will be ready to go in late 2024 or early 2025.
It will be built right behind the current hospital which will eventually be demolished.
“When I announced back in the summer that the project could go into a detailed design phase it seemed there was no turning back and now with the funding approved there really is no going back. This hospital is going to be built,” said Smith.
While the provincial funding will pay for the construction of the hospital, the equipment, furniture and many other items must be paid for by fundraising in the community, something the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation is currently doing with its “Back the Build” campaign.
