A long talked about project in Belleville’s Downtown District should finally get underway next year.
At its meeting Monday city council will see a staff recommendation that Greer Galloway Group be awarded the job of providing
contract administration and construction inspection services for the replacement of the Catharine Street footbridge.
Greer Galloway’s bid was the lowest of four at just over $231,000.
The complex project was to have started a couple of years ago but the Department of Fisheries and Oceans had concerns with fish habitat and the bridge was closed due to structural concerns in 2018.
The COVID-19 pandemic further delayed the project as most construction projects were put on hold.
If council approves the contract administration and inspection tender Monday the next major step will be the tendering for the actual building of the bridge which will feature arches, a viewing platform, and be much wider than the current one.
It’s hoped construction would start next year and be finished in 2022.
The budget for the entire project is a little over $4 million. Back in 2009 when city officials began seriously discussing the footbridge’s replacement in public, the budget was estimated at between $2 and $2.3 million.
