Hastings Prince Edward has been “effective” in fighting COVID-19 according to the Acting Medical Officer of Health.
Dr Alexa Cateray stated this to Quinte News following the Board of Health teleconference meeting on Wednesday.
“The health unit did a good job early on in identifying potential cases, in terms of people returning from travel, and isolating those cases early in the response. It enabled the health unit to minimize the impact of COVID-19 locally, by doing some really hard work. This region is blue (on a provincial chart) where as other regions of the province are scarier colours in terms of the rate of COVID-19. That’s not by magic. It’s not simply good luck, it’s down to hard work.”
Cateray emphasized the school boards and health unit have worked hard for back-to-school time.
“It’s important to note schools are an essential piece making sure children have access to education. This health unit in particular is a safe place for kids to go to school.”
Meanwhile the health unit is preparing to apply for provincial reimbursement for the costs related to COVID-19, including staff overtime and information technology.
