Major changes to a Belleville elementary school have been delayed due to COVID-19.
St. Joseph Catholic Elementary was slated for a multi-million dollar renovation to begin this fall, however that will not happen.
The Catholic School Board says students and staff were set to move to the former Sir Winston Churchill School on MacDonald Avenue, but the work now has been pushed to 2021.
Jessica Salmon with the Algonquin Lakeshore Board says the pandemic means the project cannot get off the ground in September like they were anticipating.
The second storey portion of the school will be torn down, and replaced with a larger addition, which takes the school from 14 to 20 classrooms.
They are also growing the property to the west of the current property on Bridge Street East, tearing down two homes to do so.
They also purchased a home on Herchimer Avenue which will be torn down to expand the staff and visitor parking.
The portion of the school that will stay as is will become a daycare, and before and after school program.
