There were a number of grass fires along the eastbound 401 in the afternoon hours Friday in Quinte West.
Fire Chief John Whalen says emergency responders fielded dozens of calls starting around 5:15 p.m.
Fire, the OPP, and EMS responded to the blazes.
Whalen says it was a stretch of land along Glen Miller Road.
Thirty-six fire fighters were on scene and had the smoke and flames knocked down in about an hour.
Whalen is asking motorists to not throw their cigarette butts out the window due to the extreme dry conditions.
