The CEO of the Belleville and District Chamber of Commerce says a bill against eviction of businesses will help in the long run.
Jill Raycroft responded to Premier Doug Ford’s announcement, that retroactive to May 1, no commercial landlord could evict a tenant that qualified for the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance.
The landlord waives 25 percent of the rent, the tenant pays 25 percent, and the rest is covered by the federal and provincial governments.
Raycroft says landlords need to be paid as well, and the governments are helping how they can.
She says with the pressure being off across the board, and the fact that help is there, it will help both landlord and tenant.
Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark told the Toronto Sun that many landlords were opting out of the program, causing anxiety for many small business owners.
