A major step in Belleville’s North East Industrial Park project will move forward this summer, but there’s still a holdup in one area.
The project will provide active transportation links such as new sidewalks, multi-use trails and new bus shelters to accommodate pedestrian traffic within the Industrial Park.
It has been awarded to FitzGibbon Construction Limited at $985,000.
At city council this week, Councillor Garnet Thompson noted that the project has been in the works for a couple of years, and expressed concern about the cost.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk commented.
It includes road and active transportation upgrades on Adam Street, Lahr Drive, University Avenue, Jamieson Bone Road and College Street East.
The second phase of sidewalks on College Street East and Jamieson Bone Road will proceed when the city receives approval from the Canadian National Railway for level crossing improvements.
A staff report indicates “talks with CNR are ongoing, but have been very slow.”
Other construction work
This week, Belleville city council moved on work for the Avondale area.
Council approved the low bid from Taggart Construction for a rework of stretches of Avondale and Holmes roads in the west end.
Taggart’s bid on the work totalled $5.73 million plus tax.
