At a time when senior volunteers have to remain at home during COVID-19, many people out of work, because of the virus, are stepping up.
Volunteer Information Quinte depends on hundreds of seniors who carry out work throughout the community.
Executive Director Brenda Snider tells Quinte News. “We’ve had a huge increase in individuals that have been laid off due to COVID but have stepped up and said they’d like to do something and support the volunteer movement through COVID.”
The seniors have had to stay home but others such as students, teachers and business people who are no longer in their regular routines, have stepped up to take over the jobs.
Snider says, “One of the places that we saw a huge impact is all our Meals on Wheels programs. A lot of the people who deliver Meals on Wheels are the senior population so they made some changes to the Meals on Wheels program.”
Volunteer Information Quinte has 233 people listed on its special COVID-19 volunteer program.
The agency has a regular volunteer data base with 4,000 people registered.
