Quinte West By-Law Officers will be helping police enforce provincial rules that are in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Officers will be issuing fines, or further punishment, for anyone in the city who accesses a closed recreational amenity or public space, gathers in groups of more than five people, operates a non-essential business, or is suspected to be breaking quarantine rules.
Breaching provincial rules can lead to fines between $750 and $1,000, while breaking federal emergency orders can see fines ranging from $100,000 or jail time for an individual, $500,000 for a director of a corporation or $10 million for a corporation itself.
Officers will patrol and respond to resident complaints, but ask that complaints be filed only for blatant infractions and residents should “use good judgment” in reporting them.
Reports can be filed to the OPP via their non-emergency line at 1-888-310-1122 or via their online reporting tool.
