With the exception of adhering to health and safety guidelines in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Ontario Hockey League’s Priority Selection Draft will go ahead as scheduled this Saturday.
And it promises to be a bumper year for members of the Ontario champion Quinte Minor Midget Red Devils.
14 Red Devils are ranked by OHL Central Scouting including 5 of the top 32 players born in Ontario.
Forward Dalyn Wakely and defenceman Donovan McCoy are expected to go in the first round. Forwards Owen Beck and Cooper Matthews and defenceman Aaron Brown could go in the second.
Wakely is from Port Hope. He’s listed at 6 feet and 170 pounds. Wakley led the Red Devils with 41 goals and 66 assists in 66 games played. McCoy was the top scoring Red Devils defenceman. He’s 6-1, 180. The Belleville native had 15 goals and 41 assists in 66 games.
Goaltender Corbin Votary of Napanee is among the top ranked goaltenders.
Votary had a 33-6-2 record with 8 shutouts in 41 games.
The OHL draft has been conducted by internet for many years and will continue to do so. However there are new social guidelines in place. League and member team staff cannot work from their hockey offices or arenas. All gatherings must adhere to the emergency order issued by the Ontario Government this week which prohibits public or social gatherings of more than five people.
The draft begins Saturday morning at 9 o’clock.
