Old Queen Mary up for sale
The former Queen Mary School property, in Belleville’s west end, will soon go on the block.
The property at 41 Octavia Street had been leased to the Community Resource Centre Quinte since 2002.
The lease ran out in March of last year and, as of September, the last tenant had relocated.
The building has been empty since September.
The site has frontage on three streets, Catherine, Octavia and Isabel.
The former school building is 91 years old, built in 1929, and has four floors.
A report to council this week indicates it would need “significant repairs” to be a usable building.
The city has an appraisal of $485,000.
If the building were demolished the value would increase in value.
Director of Corporate Services Matt MacDonald told council this week that staff would have the community gardens on site severed from the site, and bring back a final footprint to council for consideration.
Bowling Champion heading to the Nationals
A Belleville elementary student has been honoured by the city for his bowling prowess.
Nine-year-old Isaac Kerr received a certificate and full applause from city council this week, for winning “Bantam Provincial Champion for Ontario Bowling.”
Isaac, a student at Harry J. Clarke school, told council he began bowling at four years of age.
He says his personal best is 319.
He heads to the “Bantam Bowling Nationals” in Calgary this spring.
