A deputation to Belleville city council Monday night called on the city to change the name of Meyers Pier to Levi Pier, naming it after the black family John Meyers enslaved.
Laura Hatt and Jay Gannon rolled out John Meyers’ history of owning slaves, the four-member Levi family, for at least 11 years.
Meyers was a British spy during the American Revolution and settled in the area of what is now Belleville, in 1790.
Latt and Gannon called on the city to rename the pier and also put up a plaque outlining the Levi enslavement by Meyers.
Following the meeting Mayor Mitch Panciuk commented to Quinte News.
Council simply received the presentation.
