The city of Belleville is aiming to have some new affordable rental housing initiatives in place by next spring.
Dillon Consulting has been awarded the contract to come up with a new Affordable Rental Housing Community Improvement plan, possibly by the end of January.
This would allow city council to deal with it in the operating budget next spring.
It will help in organizing and launching affordable housing projects as soon as council makes the funds available.
Manager of Policy Planning Stephen Ashton tells Quinte News it could involve a number of incentives.
Ashton says this was a key platform for the new council.
A city statement indicates the initial Brownfields Community Improvement Plan is being reviewed to determine opportunities to prioritize the provision of affordable rental dwelling units.
In the same release Mayor Mitch Panciuk says, “We must find the road back to a balanced housing under $50,000 market and these steps are instrumental in making that happen. An adequate supply of rental housing needs to be created to ensure we are able to look after our residents and I encourage those involved to focus on this goal as we move forward.”
