An inmate died while in custody at Collins Bay Institution last week.
Assistant Warden Lynn Dufresne stated in a press release, 55-year-old Thomas Tomelty died of apparent natural causes following an illness.
He was serving a two year, two month and 29 day sentence for assault of a peace officer, possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.
Tomelty had been in custody since June 2017.
The police and coroner were notified and Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the death.
