Work to make Belleville bus stops accessible is costing more than originally expected.
On Monday, city council agreed to upgrade 13 selected bus stops at a cost to the city of just under $100,000.
Only one tender was submitted for the work.
It had originally been intended that 100 stops a year for three years be upgraded to meet accessibility standards, however, costs came in much
higher, totalling just over $700,000 for the 300 stops.
Belleville Transit Chair Councillor Bill Sandison says the plan remains the same but budgets for future work will have to be upped and that will be discussed at upcoming capital budget meetings.
Meanwhile, council also approved the purchase of 10 new bus shelters at various locations in the city. Council accepted the lower tender of two, which was submitted at a cost of $90,000.
