Belleville city council wants some questions answered before adopting a new Code of Conduct.
The new code would be in in addition to regulations already in place such as the Municipal act, the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Criminal Code.
It would cover councillors’ general conduct, conduct at meetings and public events, and confidentiality.
Following council’s meeting Monday night, Mayor Mitch Panciuk told Quinte News he has concerns that councillors could ask the Integrity Commissioner for advice that is not made public.
Councillor Kelly McCaw had concerns that councillors could end up using the Integrity Commissioner as a personal advisor.
“How many enquiries are too many?” she questioned. “Maybe three times a year (seeking advice) then you pay for it.”
The city’s Integrity Commissioner would be responsible for looking into any complaints raised regarding violations of the code of conduct.
A member that has contravened the code could receive a reprimand from council or have a suspension of their remuneration for a period of up to 90 days.
Council decided to table the motion on the Code.
It is now asking for staff information on some issues, and questions to the Integrity Commissioner as well.
