Some Ontario farm communities are calling for stronger laws to ensure farm safety from activists who disrupt the agricultural business.
Those communities in southwestern Ontario are concerned about protests which they say have become “blatantly illegal in nature with extremist groups trespassing onto private property, unlawfully entering buildings and removing animals without fear of prosecution, and even promoting their actions on social media.”
In its letter to Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey, the Township of Warwick says agriculture is the second largest industry in Ontario.
It points out no criminal charges have been laid, leaving farmers feeling unprotected.
Hastings County council has voted to support the resolution.
Hastings County Warden Rick Phillips spoke with Quinte News.
In its resolution, the municipality of South Huron says agriculture is essential for putting food on the tables of millions of people here and around the world.
