A lengthy strike by the sheet metal workers’ union has held up construction work at Belleville’s new police station.
The two-month strike held up work on the roof of the station where ducts were being installed.
The new police station is being built in what was Belleville Water and Veridian Connects, at the corner of College and Sidney streets.
Special Projects Manager Joel Carr-Braint tells Quinte News the strike “hurt us hard.”
Carr-Braint says, “The roof can’t be fixed until the ducts are installed, and since the roof has some leaks, the drywall can’t be installed inside.”
The contractor Buttcon East is now preparing a schedule update for him.
The $23 million new police station, which includes the original buildings plus an addition, had been scheduled for completion at the end of the year.
Various services such as 911 will then be installed, with move-in set for the spring of 2020.
It will include special storage areas for seized drugs such as Fentanyl, and jail cells.
