A group of volunteers from the Hastings Prince Edward Regiment are getting ready to undertake a 100 mile walk to mark the role played by the Regiment in World War Two.
The Hasty Ps were part of the Invasion of Sicily, Code Named Operation Husky, in which the allies took Sicily and fought up through the Italian Peninsula in 1943, one year before D-Day in France.
Chief Warrant Officer Dean Stokes will lead the 100 Mile March, 160 kilometres, on July 8 and July 9, to commemorate the hundreds of miles the soldiers have marched.
About a dozen volunteer soldiers are joining the walk, some doing 20 mile stretches, six doing the complete walk.
The Chief Warrant Officer tells Quinte News he has checked out the route twice and it will touch all three of the Hasty Ps’ regimental bases.
They will walk from Cobourg to Peterborough the first day, and from Peterborough to Belleville the second day.
He says they will carry some food and water but will also make some stops for food along the way.
Stokes says the plan is to arrive at Belleville Armouries the evening of the 9th, in time for the local Pachino commemoration of the landing in Italy on July 10, 1943, being held the next day.
That commemoration will be held at the Belleville Armouries on the morning of July 10.
To hear the full interview with Chief Warrant Officer Stokes listen to Mary Thomas on Newsmaker Sunday, this Sunday at the noon hour on 800 CJBQ.
