If you live around areas of the Quinte Region where military training tends to take place, 8 Wing Trenton officials want to remind you about the dangers of handling found flares and marine smoke markers.
The flares and markers are used during various training sessions around the region and Captain Graeme Scott says, with the weather warming and people heading to local beaches and waterways, these items may be found.
He says flares and smoke markers, used to illuminate the night sky or to help with rescuing people on the water, are designed to self destruct or sink, but sometimes they don’t.
If you come across a used flare or smoke marker you’re urged not to pick it up, or keep it as a souvenir, but to contact local police or the base, who will make arrangements for disposal.
You can report any found military pyrotechnics by calling the base at 613-392-2811 ext. 3310.
