Film buffs will descend on Downtown Belleville this weekend for the eighth annual Downtown Docfest, showcasing 50 documentaries, including two that were noinated for Academy Awards this year.
Free Solo chronicles a climb, without safety ropes, up the 3,000 El Capitan cliff at Yosemite National Park and won the Oscar for best feature documentary.
Docfest Chair Holly Dewar says having Oscar-nominated films on the schedule shows how far the festival has grown since it began.
Along with those Oscar-nominated films, Docfest will also show off the work of some local filmmakers.
A total of nine local films will showcased throughout the weekend at various venues throughout the city’s downtown core.
Dewar says local filmmakers are starting to produce some outstanding projects.
One of the main highlights of the weekend is the Green Carpet Gala, at Empire Theatre, which will feature a screening of Gurrumul and musical performance from Logan Staats from the TV show “The Launch”.
Dewar says another popular part of the weekend is a panel discussion on Sunday morning, when film buffs can learn more about the process of putting a feature documentary together.
The films will be screened at the Empire Theatre, Pinnacle Playhouse, Belleville Public Library, Core Centre and Bridge Street United Church.
