Quinte West Council is spending $45,000 to buy an old school building from the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board.
The Quinte Women’s Institute has used the old River Valley School for years as a community centre and will continue to use it once the property officially changes hands.
Mayor Jim Harrison says he is confident that, despite the building’s deteriorating condition, it will be a valuable asset to the community.
Some councillors had questioned the purchase, due to the property’s condition, but others echoed the mayor’s sentiment that the value of the building to members of the community made the purchase worth it.
