Quinte West OPP are getting set to take more control over patrols of Highway 401 in our area.
Currently, Napanee OPP handle the entire stretch of the highway from the Northumberland County boundary through to Kingston, but Quinte West officers will take over part of that this spring.
Detachment Commander Inspector Christina Reive says they are still working on the specifics, but her officers will begin proactive and reactive patrols of the 401 from Smithfield Road to Highway 37 just before the summer.
Both Reive and Quinte West Fire Chief John Whelan agreed that the change will make a big difference in emergency situation responses, because officers will be closer and more familiar with the area.
