Belleville will go to the public before deciding whether or not to ban all portable advertising signs that are not located at the actual location of the business.
Councillor Jackie Denyes told city council Monday night residents have complained about the proliferation of portable advertising signs throughout the city.
Denyes said the present by-law was put in place in 2006 and had not been changed since.
Chief Building Official Ted Marecak told council that it would not be looked on favourably by businesses if the present by-law was changed.
When questioned by Councillor Egerton Boyce whether or not people were following the rules about putting up signs, Marecak replied that the by-law is “actively enforced.”
A report to council indicated that staff surveyed Kingston, Napanee, Quinte West and Cobourg and discovered Belleville was the only one of the communities that allowed off-premise portable signs.
Council decided to hold public consultations before making any decision on the by-law.
