Ontario has provided a $300,000 grant to help develop the world’s first beer brewed from marijuana, and Loyalist College is involved.
A Toronto company, Province Brands of Canada, which also put up $300,000, has teamed up with Loyalist to create the beer which could go on sale when edible cannabis products are legalized, probably next year.
Province Brands is developing its cannabis beer with teachers and students at Loyalist College’s Applied Research Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis. The lab has a licence from Health Canada to do research and analysis on cannabis.
Loyalist president Ann Marie Vaughan tells Quinte News, “The college is working with Province Brands in the development of a product in this new industry, the cannabis industry. This is something that happens commonly across Ontario and for us it’s a new, innovative research partnership for the college.”
She says it’s a research partnership using staff and students.
Loyalist has worked with many groups in the natural products industry.
Vaughan says the federal government has indicated cannabis is going to be legalized and companies are developing now to be ready.
