The mayor of Prescott says two serious Highway 401 crashes this week — one of which was fatal — shows the need for action to expand the highway in the area.
Brett Todd and other members of the Eastern Ontario Mayors’ Caucus have been working on recommendations for the provincial government since a massive pileup near Mallorytown in March of 2017.
That crash — which involved 30 vehicles, including a dozen transports — killed one person and sent more than two dozen others to hospital.
Todd says truck traffic has been constantly increasing and the highway should be expanded to three lanes.
The province is in discussions with local municipalities to expand the local 401 from four to six lanes.
Belleville, Quinte West and Prince Edward County are all part of the Eastern Ontario Mayors’ Caucus.
