A national cheese maker, Saputo Dairy Products GP, has been fined $150,000 after the death of a worker at its Trenton plant in December of 2016.
According to Today’s Northumberland, Saputo, based out of Montreal, pleaded guilty Tuesday in a Belleville courtroom and must also pay a 25% victim surcharge.
The worker was killed by a cheese cutter machine in Trenton.
The device should have had a guard to prevent access to the cutter’s pinch point.
Evidence in the courtroom showed that the employee was working alone in the parmesan department and was found deceased by other workers in the pinch point of a large cheese cutting machine.
