A majority of Prince Edward County council members supported the building of a new chicken growing operation, but not enough of a majority to have the project approved last night (Wednesday).
Benjamin Thompson had applied for rezoning of land at 2947 Victoria Road to allow a “broiler barn” that would hold 28,000 chickens on a nine-week cycle.
Prince Edward County’s planning staff said the application met all of the requirements and recommended it be approved, however less than two thirds of council supported it.
Mayor Robert Quaiff.
About 20 people, many who live near the property, showed up at council’s planning meeting last night.
The matter will now be discussed at Prince Edward County council’s next meeting.
