Members of the Poverty Roundtable of Hastings and Prince Edward took their message to the streets Tuesday.
The group took part in the national “Chew On This” campaign, handing out bag lunches throughout Belleville, Quinte West, Picton and Wellington, to raise awareness about poverty related issues and food insecurity.
Povery Roundtable Member Tami Downs says the government needs to do more for people who are on social assistance programs, by building better housing and improving access to food.
Poverty Roundtable Director Christine Durant says in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties, almost 12% of the population is food insecure, which is “ridiculous for an area that produces a lot of agriculture”.
She tells Quinte News the Federal Government needs to take action in its upcoming poverty plan.
