There has been a lot of discussion about good jobs going unfilled in Canada, and an expert told Quinte region business owners and managers that hiring skilled immigrants and/or disabled people can solve that problem.
Mark Patterson, head of Magnet and Hire Immigrants run out of Ryerson University, told a business appreciation breakfast at Loyalist College today (Tuesday) that repeated studies show that a diversified workforce will lead to better business results.
While admitting there are challenges in the hiring of the disabled and immigrants, Patterson stresses that diversity is a proven way to go. He says the current anti-immigration climate in the U.S. is an opportunity for Canadian business.
Patterson pointed to subconscious biases amongst many people proven in a study that showed a resume featuring the name “Samir” received one third fewer calls for an interview than the same resume with the name “Matthew”.
