As the August Civic long weekend approaches, the public can expect an increased police presence out on local roadways and waterways.
OPP detachments across the province including the Quinte region will have their marine units out in full force in an effort to raise awareness and reduce alcohol related deaths.
According to the OPP, drinking and boating account for approximately 40 percent of boating related fatalities on Canadian waterways.
Quinte West OPP constable Dave Snider said the marine unit will be out on the water again this weekend starting Friday until the end of summer, discouraging the dangerous practice of impaired boating.
In Ontario, no alcohol can be consumed by anyone on board while a boat is underway. Only boats with permanent sleeping, cooking and washroom facilities may permit consumption but only when docked.
Prince Edward OPP constable Kim Guthrie said what continues to surprise her is the lack of boaters who wear life jackets out on the water.
It’s only mandatory to have life jackets available on board, however the self-inflating jackets must be worn in order to be considered a life jacket.
Guthrie said the only way all life jackets will work is if they’re worn.
