The Canadian Red Cross is dropping out of the program to provide the after-hours homeless service for Hastings County, Belleville and Quinte West.
In the past year, the Red Cross helped 164 males, 119 females and 83 families into temporary accommodations during after hours, weekends and holidays.
The Community and Human Services committee learned Wednesday that the agency will not renew the service agreement at the end of this year, indicating it is no longer within its mandate.
The program ensured that those experiencing homelessness, or an immediate emergency, after regular office hours, are provided with support services until they can meet with an Ontario Works case worker the following business day.
