High water from heavy rains has turned Belleville’s Victoria Park into a virtual island, and city officials are working to minimize the damage.
The park and Victoria Harbour are essentially cut off from the mainland of the city, and water is right up to the Yacht Club door on the south end.
Director of Recreation Mark Fluhrer says the park surface is either in water or saturated, and there are some serious issues to deal with.
He says the harbour has been cleared of boats that he says are “crammed in at Meyers Pier” but there is still a need to access the Yacht Club building in the park.
Fluhrer says he’s concerned for those living near the bay, particularly in the Foster Ward area. He says the city is working hard to minimize the impact in that area.
Fluhrer says the water in Lake Ontario is very high and the St.Lawrence Seaway Commission is releasing the extra water carefully, without causing damage downstream in Montreal.
