While low water levels in Belleville’s Moira River have been bad news for most of the summer, Quinte Conservation says it’s actually going to allow them to get some important work done.
Workers will be making some upgrades to the McLoed Dam, which was built in 1979, to protect the downtown core from ice-related flooding and then updated in 2007 to allow the ability to produce hydroelectricity.
The work will take about a week to finish and involves removing rock from the river bed, to improve water flow and fish habitats.
General Manager Terry Murphy says in prime conditions, the dam can generate enough electricity to power about 400 homes in the area.
