The Collins Bay Institution in Kingston is under lockdown.
Officials at the maximum security prison says the lockdown was put in place yesterday morning to enable staff members to conduct an exceptional search.
Regular scheduled visits may be affected and visitors are asked to contact the institution directly.
Normal operations will resume once it is considered safe to do so.
