UPDATE:
Belleville City Council has called a special meeting of council for Monday July 4, 2016 at 3:00 p.m.
Members will be in closed session and the topic is believed to be the acquisition of a hockey team for the municipality.
EARLIER STORY:
Belleville Mayor Taso Christopher says an announcement about a new hockey team could be coming in less than a week.
At Thursday morning’s Mayor’s Implementation Team meeting, Mayor Christopher updated the media on the latest discussions with an unnamed hockey organization.
Christopher says they have talked to every level of hockey since the departure of the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League.
The discussions with one team in particular have included a Letter of Interest, a Non-Disclosure Agreement and a Memorandum of Understanding.
A group called Architecture49 is currently designing drawings for work on the Yardmen Arena.
No new seating is part of those drawings.
On CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show, Councillor Jack Miller said the city wants to be in an active role, so it can protect itself, taxpayers and hockey fans.
