Belleville has tweeked its transit system to accommodate a budget cut, with a number of bus changes.
City council had cut $100,000 from the transit budget earlier this year and transit chair Councillor Jack Miller presented a list of adjustments for approval.
These include merging two routes and modifying others.
Councillor Miller.
Miller warned council that the present service to Ward 2, financed by the gas tax, would have to be reconsidered later this year.
Work to start at city hall
The contract has been approved for a major construction project to make Belleville’s city hall more accessible.
Earlier this year council decided on a major adjustment to the elevator itself rather than trying to replace the present disability lift at the front entrance.
During construction this summer, public access will be by a back entrance and those with disabilities would have escorted access at the back entrance, off Market Square.
Chief Building Inspector Ted Maracek told council work would begin soon on cleaning out the “basement entrance” which would be used by the public during the construction work.
On Monday city council awarded the contract to Tom Belch and Sons Building Contractors for 533,898.
The Maple Leaf Forever
A Belleville couple has written a new version of the old Canadian national song “A Maple Leaf Forever” and hope it will form part of Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017.
Ted Ryczko says it was almost like a national anthem at one time, and explains why it needed changing.
Rycko presented a copy of the new version to city council Monday and council stood to sing along.
