The Hastings Prince Edward Board of Health was faced with some hard facts about the effects caused by an opioid epidemic in Ontario.
In 2015, there were 5,383 non-intentional oipiod deaths across the province.
Wednesday, Kingston area Dr. Kieran Moore told the board that local opioid prescribing rates are higher than the provincial average.
He says some strides have been made when it comes to Oxycontin overdoses due to its discontinuation but sadly prescriptions in other areas have increased.
He says the College of Physicians will be hosting an event on May 10 with over 80 physicians in attendance where the focus will be on reeducation on prescribing opioids.
