While buildings and people aren’t necessarily at risk, Lower Trent Conservation says if you live near the water, you should prepare for some nuisance flooding.
The local environmental agency has issued a flood watch for the Trent River, from Hastings to Trenton, as frazil ice contributes to rapidly changing water levels.
Frazil ice forms when there’s a lack of ice coverage and the temperature drops below minus 18 Celsius, it causes slushy accumulations on bridges, piers and riverbanks.
The main point of the warning is the reminder to use caution around area lakes and streams, to stay off area waterways that may look frozen and to prepare for minor flooding of access roads, back yards and basements.
Meanwhile, Quinte Conservation has issued a Water Safety Statement, essentially saying the same thing to residents of the 18 municipalities in its watershed.
