A lethal fungus discovered west of Bancroft, responsible for decimating bat populations in the northeastern United States is spreading.
The fungus doesn’t kill bats, but it’s believed to be linked to white nose syndrome, named for a ring of white fungus around bats’ nostrils and muzzle.
The first Canadian case was confirmed a few weeks ago at an abandoned mine in the Bancroft-Minden area. The fungus has since been discovered in Hastings, Peterborough, Grey and Renfrew counties, and in Kirkland Lake.
