Still no settlement in sight for the Culbertson Tract land claim by the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte. The Culbertson Land Tract is a 923-acre parcel of land covering much of Deseronto and Tyendinaga Township. A spokesperson for Indian and Northern Affairs, Margot Gelduld, told our newsroom no meetings are scheduled between the two sides. Talks between the Mohawks and the federal government broke off nearly two years ago. Ottawa has offered money, but will not transfer land back to the Mohawk band. But Chief R. Don Maracle has maintained the band wants the land returned, even if it has to happen over several generations.
