Two dozen Ontario YMCA’s met yesterday to discuss the Province’s plan to start full-day learning for kindergarten students this September. Bob Gallagher said YMCAs support the vision of full day learning, but Bill 242 goes far beyond the government’s stated objectives and will de-stabilize the province’s licensed child care system, resulting in fewer options and higher costs for parents. The YMCA’s concerns centre on the bill’s requirement school boards directly operate day programs before and after school hours for children in kindergarten, but boards can’t partner with local not-for profit providers to offer those programs..
