Three former Belleville residents will be honoured by the Governor General for bravery in Afghanistan. The trio are among 58 individuals mentioned in dispatches for special achievements.
Captain Christopher Carthew, now posted in Shilo, Manitoba, brought order back to the situation after his patrol was destroyed during an ambush in September, 2008. Private Jeffrey Atlee, now in Petawawa, moved through intense enemy fire and returned fire after his platoon was ambushed in October of the same year. Master Corporal Kevin Walker, currently posted to Petawawa, led his assault team to cover under rocket and rifle fire when his section was ambushed, also in October, 2008. A ceremony will be held at a later date.
