It’s been more than a month since inmates at Warkworth Institution have seen the outside of their living quarters. Assistant Warden Ann Anderson says a semi-lockdown has been in effect since the “riot act” was read during a fiery protest by about 200-inmates in late July. Anderson says the modified routine allows residents to shower and make phone calls…but, the recreation area and kitchen are off limits and visitors aren’t permitted. One inmate died during the riot after injesting a quantity pills taken from the prison’s Health Centre. Anderson says Warkworth won’t return to its regular routine until management and the union agree that the Institution is safe.
