A disagreement over pepper spray may have been behind the riot by prisoners at Warkworth Institution.
One inmate died and several others were treated for drug overdoses after the prisoners refused to return to their cells on the evening of July 21st.
There apparently had been a debate between management and correctional officers over the guards’ wish to carry the spray while they patrolled the recreation yard.. However, the discussion, which ended in favour of the officers, delayed the inmates’ yard time by 20 to 25 minutes.
Corrections Canada has not officially commented on the reason for the prisoners’ protest.
